I hope that what I'm writing will be read by someone, preferably an ALSA expert.
I am a longtime Linux user. Until three days ago I was using a very old Debian sarge. After some effort and help from sound experts, I had got my sound system working, back in February. My card is:
via82xx VIA Technologies
This last weekend -- Mar 22-23 -- I upgraded to etch. I performed the same drill
apt-get install module-assistant module-assistant auto-install alsa-source
that had worked for my sarge install. I have run alsamixer, to set my volume levels to high. aplay seems to run, on a variety of left-over .wav files. But no sound comes from my speakers!
Suggestions? If any are made, please send them to my home E-address, alan@patriot.net.

(added 27 Mar 08, two days later) Following a suggestion from a Debian-users list member I ran alsaconf ; this asked me a couple of questions, ran placidly for several seconds . . . and now my sound is back. The responder on Debian-users opined that it was a question of modules being loaded into the kernel in the correct order . . .
I would delete these two postings if I knew how to<g>. Perhaps some maintainer will do it in a while . . .
